kids learning to become their very best in three sports.

OUR MISSION.

Establish passion for competitive youth triathlon in New York City. Create a friendly, fun, and inclusive environment where each participant has the chance to be their best as an athlete and as an individual.

By encouraging athletes to thrive in this environment we expect to be competitive at the national level across all age groups.

Combine proven and innovative training methods to open up next-level opportunities in triathlon at the college, professional, and club/team levels.

OUR VISION.

Triathlon is as commonplace and accessible as running, swimming, soccer, basketball, and other sports.

Our community at Big City Tri will be as energetic and diverse as the city we represent.

Not only will we compete at an elite level, but also become a nationally recognized & certified USA Triathlon High Performance Team.

setting your kids up for athletic success through training and competition.

 FAQs

  • A triathlon is a swim, a bike, then a run one after the other. After each leg of the race there is a quick “transition” where you change to clothing and equipment necessary for the next leg. The distances, types of swimming (pool, lake, ocean, river), and distances/terrain vary significantly from race to race, but the framework largely remains the same from event to event.

  • Winter (Jan ‘24) Practice Schedule
Up to 4 days per week, with 10&under in the first half, and 11&over in the second half:

    Wednesday Bike/Run, 4-6pm
    Friday Bike/Run, 4-6pm
    Saturday Swim/Run, 9-1130am
    Monday Swim, 630-830pm

  • In an ideal world, yes. We have a few bikes available, but supply and size are limited. However, if you need a bicycle, let us know and we will work out a solution for you.

Note: Kids need to be comfortable riding a bike to participate.

  • Here is the list of ideal equipment to have:

    · Swim Goggles

    · Swim Cap

    · Swimsuit

    · Bike

    · Helmet

    · Bicycle flat tire repair kit

    · Water Bottle

    · Bike Pump

    · Running Shoes

    · Comfortable bike & run apparel

  • We train year-round. Our program is generally broken up into three seasons: technical/skill accumulation and base training, a draft-legal race season, and a summer race season including Youth & Junior Nationals. Full participation in the draft-legal season requires summer training, and if your child would like to compete at Nationals then we believe it is important for them to train with the team through July.

Technical & Skill Accumulation Season (September through December - Break for Dec Holidays).

Focus on sport specific skills & drills including bike handling, stroke development, and running technique

Emphasis on education, recovery, and nutrition

Draft-Legal Race Season (January through June)

Focus on building race fitness with technique that holds up under pressure (local goal races highlighted)

    · Mini Man Pool Triathlon, NY - Apr 23
    · Richmond, VA - Apr 30 (draft-legal)
    · Pleasant Prairie, WI - June 4 (draft-legal)
    · Kids Triathlon for Bob Kelleher, NY - June 11
    · Beaver Falls, PA - June 17 (draft-legal)
    · Local 5ks and time trials to help prepare

Summer Race Season (July & August)

    Prepare for Nationals

Focus on lifelong triathlon skills including open water swimming, non-draft legal racing, and longer races for those who are interested (Olympic distance maximum)

    · Des Moines, IA - July 9 (draft-legal)
    · Hamptons Youth Triathlon, NY - July 15
    · USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Nationals, WI - Aug 4-5 (includes Age Group and qualification only, draft-legal)

  • Absolutely! We recognize there are other sporting and life commitments. So much so, that we are actively looking to partner with single sport high school teams. Email us and we will find a way for you to participate without disrupting your existing commitments.

Some examples: Middle or high school swim seasons usually happen in the fall or winter months. Train with your team during that time and attend bike/run workouts with us when you can. Cross country mostly happens in the fall, so join us for swims or bikes to fill out your week and join in full after champs. Track is in the spring, and swimming and cycling activities can help running legs recover while you build skill. Club swimmers who compete year round can work with their coaches to allow for other triathlon training - club swimmers can be very successful in triathlon.

  • In season, you may attend up to three workouts without signing up as a full or part-time member (summer offers one free workout). Please email us to arrange for the best time to attend!

  • Our goal is to build a nationally competitive racing team that travels to the largest races over the course of the season. However, we encourage all interested members to sign up with zero commitment to travel with the team. There are dozens of local events that do not require extensive travel to participate in. If you enjoy the racing environment, then feel free to travel with us to the national events.
